The geopolitical and technological changes of recent years have highlighted the potential dangers of drones. It is foreseeable that the survivability of military assets on a future battlefield will be severely impaired without an appropriate air defence system. In the event of a crisis, critical infrastructure will also require protection by air defence systems. This will require complementing existing, high-performance but costly systems (e.g. based on air defence missiles) with cost-effective systems that operate at close range (e.g. based on ballistic weapon systems). An important part of this solution is to ensure reliable and accurate detection of UAVs, as well as the precise deployment of defence measures.
As part of an internal R&D project, we are currently investigating the combination of compact radar technology with innovative lidar sensors to reliably detect and efficiently defend against UAVs.
